Teuvo Teravainen scored the go-ahead goal with 27.9 seconds left in the second period, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the visiting Washington Capitals, 2-1, Thursday night to even their playoff series at two games apiece.
Warren Foegele scored 17 seconds in, giving him three goals in two home games, and Petr Mrazek made 30 saves for Hurricanes. They fed off the energy of the largest hockey crowd in PNC Arena history to win their second in a row on home ice after routing Washington, 5-0, in Game 3.
Alex Ovechkin scored a power-play goal and Braden Holtby finished with 22 saves for the Capitals, who hadn’t lost consecutive games in regulation since late January.

Jaden Schwartz scored with 15 seconds remaining to break a tie and send the visiting St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets to take a 3-2 series lead. The goal was part of a third-period rally in which the Blues scored all three of their goals. Ryan O’Reilly and Brayden Schenn scored the other goals.

Ben Simmons scored 31 points with nine assists, Tobias Harris scored 29 with 16 rebounds and JJ Redick added 26 as the Philadelphia 76ers soared to a 131-115 win against the host Brooklyn Nets to take a 2-1 series lead in the Eastern series. Joel Embiid missed the game for the 76ers with a sore left knee.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry shot a 6-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, S.C. at Harbour Town Golf Links. Trey Mullinax, Daniel Berger, Luke List, Ryan Moore and Ryan Palmer were tied for second.
• Nelly Korda birdied four of her final five holes to take a two-shot lead on defending champion Brooke Henderson midway through the second round of the Lotte Championship in Kapolei, Hawaii.

Robert Morris basketball coach Andrew Toole announced that freshman forward Olisa Ngonadi (Fort Washington, Md.) and junior forwards D.J. Russell (Jacksonville, Fla.) and AJ Bramah (San Leandro, Cal.) have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Colonials.
Tennis
Defending champion Rafael Nadal and topranked Novak Djokovic eased into the Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinals Thursday, remaining on course to meet in the final of the clay-court tournament they’ve long dominated. The two rivals, who share 32 Grand Slam titles, could meet for a 54th time. They have won every tournament here since 2005 except for 2014.
Baseball
The Oakland Athletics agreed to a new contract with slugger Khris Davis through the 2021 season. The deal adds $33.75 million for 2020 and ’21, which increased Davis’ guarantee to $50.25 million over three years. Davis hit a majors-best 48 home runs last season while setting a career high with 123 RBIs.
Horse racing
Santa Anita will continue racing through June 23, despite objections from animal rights activists who urged the California Horse Racing Board to shutter the historic track in Acadia, Cal. in the wake of 23 horse deaths.
