National Enquirer being sold to former newsstand mogul
The National Enquirer is being sold to James Cohen, the former head of the airport newsstand company Hudson News. The deal comes after a rocky year for the tabloid in which it was caught in a federal probe of illegal campaign contributions to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016. Financial terms were not disclosed for the deal, which also includes two other American Media tabloids, the Globe and the National Examiner.
Retail sales in U.S. climbed 1.6% in March
U.S. retail sales rose in March, as spending on autos, gasoline, furniture and clothing jumped. The Commerce Department said sales increased a seasonally adjusted 1.6% from February, the strongest increase since September 2017.
Texas Instruments to build facility, create 488 jobs
Dallas-based Texas Instruments has chosen Richardson, Texas, as the site for an approximately $3.1 billion facility that’s expected to create more than 488 jobs. The semiconductor company will receive millions of dollars in tax incentives. It has more than 9,000 employees in Texas.
T-Mobile offering checking account
T-Mobile entered the mobile banking market with a checking account that consumers can manage on their smartphones. The third-largest U.S. wireless carrier has partnered with BankMobile, a division of Customers Bank, to offer the checking account, called T-Mobile Money.
Canadian company plans to buy N.Y. marijuana firm
Canopy Growth Corp., of Canada, has agreed to buy the New Yorkbased marijuana company Acreage Holdings Inc. for $3.4 billion in a cross-border deal that may usher in a wave of consolidation in the burgeoning industry. The deal hinges on the U.S. legalizing weed at the federal level.
