The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg has a new president.

Robert G. Gregerson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and senior adviser to the provost at Florida Gulf Coast University, takes over July 1, Pitt officials said Wednesday.

He succeeds Sharon P. Smith, Pitt Greensburg president since 2007. Last year, she announced her retirement, effective June 30 of this year.

Mr. Gregerson has, for three decades, held academic positions of authority and various appointments at large and medium-scale public universities. He also worked for a private liberal arts college.

As dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast, he focused on an advancement plan to support programs, faculty and students. At the same time, he was acting provost and vice president for academic affairs and later a senior adviser to the provost.

“Bob’s dedication to collaboration, community and academic excellence is clear,” Pitt Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I am excited to welcome him to the University of Pittsburgh, and I cannot wait for him to turn his attention and talents toward supporting our Greensburg campus and its success.”

Mr. Gregerson has also served as a biology professor and department head at Armstrong State University in Georgia and dean of the College of Science and Technology. He has also taught at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., and was a research geneticist with the University of Minnesota/U.S. Department of Agriculture.

He has a doctoral degree in molecular genetics from the University of Georgia and a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Wabash College.

Pitt Greensburg is one of four regional campuses of the university and has about 1,500 students.
