Penguins re- sign forward Johnson

-

The Penguins re- signed forward Adam Johnson Friday to a one- year contract.

The two- way deal will pay the 25- year- old restricted free agent $ 700,000 in the NHL. The Penguins had extended Johnson a qualifying offer in June.

“Adam has definitely put the work in. He’s a great skater, and has worked extremely hard to get to another level of strength and conditioning, which certainly helped him in his second pro season,” assistant general manager Bill Guerin said in a statement. “I think he proved not only to us but also to himself that he can play in the National Hockey League.”

Johnson appeared in six games for the Penguins in the 2018- 19 season. In 63 games with Wilkes- Barre/ Scranton, he scored 18 goals with 25 assists.

Johnson went undrafted out of Minnesota- Duluth and signed with the Penguins after the 2017 prospect development camp, which he attended on a tryout contract.

Marcus Pettersson and Teddy Blueger also received qualifying offers from the Penguins. The team reached a one- year deal with Joseph Blandisi last week.

Their other restricted free agent, Zach Aston- Reese, filed for salary arbitration, and a hearing is scheduled for later in the month.
