MLB suspended two players, including Phillies closer Hector Neris.
Los Angeles pitcher Noe Ramirez was suspended for three games and fined for throwing at Houston outfielder Jake Marisnick’s head, and Angels manager Brad Ausmus was suspended a game and fined.
Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball, announced the penalties Wednesday, a day after Ramirez drilled Marisnick between the shoulder blades.
Marisnick was playing his first game against Los Angeles since his violent home plate collision with catcher Jonathan Lucroy nine days ago, after which Marisnick was suspended two games.

Philadelphia Phillies closer Hector Neris was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing a pitch in the area of the head of David Freese of the Dodgers.
• San Jose’s Ernie Broglio, a former major league pitcher best known for being part of the most lopsided trade in baseball history, died in San Jose, Calif. He was 83. Broglio was an ace with the Cardinals in the early 1960s, but the right- hander’s fame was born of a trade 55 years ago when he was shipped to the Cubs for future Hall- ofFamer Lou Brock.
• Former Boston Red Sox infielder Elijah “Pumpsie” Green, the first black player on the last major league team to field one, died. He was 85.

Canadians Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp shot a 5- under 65 in alternate- shot play to take the first- round lead in the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational, the LPGA Tour’s first- year team event, in Midland, Mich.
Harness racing
Working Ona Mystery ( 2- 1), De Los Cielos Deo
( 5- 2) and Southwind Ozzi ( 5- 2) have been installed as morning line favorites for Saturday’s eliminations for the $ 475,000 Delvin Miller Adios Pace for the Orchids at The Meadows in Washington, Pa. The card begins at 1: 05 p. m., and the eliminations are scheduled as races 7, 8 and 10. The top three finishers advance to the $ 400,000 final July 27.

Atlanta snapped a threegame winless run. … Diego Fagundez, Carles Gil and Teal Bunbury scored late and the host New England Revolution ( 7- 8- 6) beat the Vancouver Whitecaps ( 4- 10- 8), 4- 0.
Swimming
Germany won the mixed 5- kilometer open water team relay at the world swimming championships in a close finish against Italy and the United States at Gwangju, South Korea. The German quartet finished in a time of 53 minutes, 58.70 seconds. Haley Anderson, Jordan Wilimovsky, Ashley Twichell and Michael Brinegar made up the U. S. team that finished just threetenths of a second behind Germany in 53: 59.00.
