YWCA Greater Pittsburgh finds new chief executive in Texas
Janine Woods was named chief executive of the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh, effective July 8.
Ms. Woods succeeds Magdeline Jensen who retired in June 2018. The nonprofit operated under two interim chief executives after Ms. Jensen’s departure.
Ms. Woods most recently was chief executive of Brown Family Health Center in Nacogdoches, Texas, which provides medical care, counseling, a food pantry and other services in a 12- county rural region of East Texas.
Her work experience also includes positions at the Foundation for The Carolinas, Save the Children, and the North Carolina Dental Health Fund. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, a master’s from Webster University in St. Louis, and a certificate in nonprofit management from Duke University.
Ms. Woods comes to the YWCA at a time that the Pittsburgh nonprofit is restructuring programs following a significant downsizing of its operations.
The organization cut 62 employees — about half its workforce — after it lost a state grant worth $ 67 million to manage Allegheny County’s Early Learning Resource Center.
The YWCA had managed the child care resource program for more than 20 years, but lost it in a bid process to the county’s Department of Human Services. Many of the YWCA workers funded by the grant were offered jobs at the county.
The YWCA continues to offer child care and community programming at its facility on Frankstown Avenue, Homewood, and has a Downtown resource center to assist women and families.
It also offers STEM education programs and is in the process of realigning its Center for Race and Gender Equity.
New programming and initiatives are planned to address racism, bias, marginalized populations and community advocacy, the YWCA said.
According to its most recent federal tax filing for the fiscal year ending in June 2017, the organization had net assets of $ 46.3 million and an endowment of $ 30.6 million.
