UPMC is bad for Jefferson Hills
The evil empire of UPMC has been attempting to expand into the South Hills, initially into Pleasant Hills. But for whatever reasons, the local officials resisted temptations in favor of their area residents and their neighborhood integrity.
Then UPMC targeted Jefferson Hills. Using a subterfuge enterprise called AUUE to conceal UPMC’s identity and shenanigans, it acquired property between Route 51 and Old Clairton Road — an existing driving range and miniature golf course. Surprisingly, the local officials quietly decided use of this property for a fullscale hospital — around- theclock, 24- hours- a- day, with ambulances, sirens, helicopters, flood lights and a massive parking lot — would satisfy the existing zoning regulations.
There has been considerable opposition expressed by area residents. In fact, over 100 residents filed a legal appeal. They don’t want such a disruptive medical monstrosity right in their back yards. There have been over a half- dozen lengthy hearings before the borough zoning board. Many of those over 100 residents gave detailed, well- prepared testimony as to why they would be adversely affected. Several people who were personally involved with developing the actual zoning code ( about 30 years ago) have testified that it was never intended or envisioned to allow for such a construction in this quiet residential area.
Curiously, the driving range operator testified that a number of years back, his business had applied for zoning approval to expand the business to also include batting cages. This was rejected on the basis that it could be disruptive for the area.
To my knowledge, none of the borough council or planning commission member or the mayor has attended any appeal hearings to listen to their constituents. I do not want to see UPMC coming into our neighborhood. Anyone associated with UPMC has nothing to be proud of. It’s an enterprise of scoundrels recognized as ruthless, greedy and destructive to any medical options other than their own. I don’t see any benefit or any good reason why Jefferson Hills would want to encourage, support, tolerate or associate in any way with UPMC. CARL E. ZUCKER
