Matt Cullen staying with Penguins in a player developmen­t role.

Matt Cullen, 42, who recently announced his retirement after a 21- year playing career, will join the Penguins hockey operations department in a player- developmen­t role, the team announced Thursday.

Cullen will work closely with general manager Jim Rutherford, coach Mike Sullivan and his staff.

When Cullen retired, he said he was happy to have the opportunit­y to “finish it where I really should finish it, in Pittsburgh.” Now, he begins the next chapter of his hockey life in a fitting place, in Pittsburgh.

Five- time Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil surprising­ly came out of retirement to join the New York Jets. Kalil retired last season after 12 years with the Carolina Panthers.

• Denver’s Juwann Winfree caught a tipped pass on 4th down and 14 for a touchdown with 1 minute, 26 seconds remaining to beat Atlanta, 14- 10, in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. Broncos cornerback Trey Johnson intercepte­d Falcons backup quarterbac­k Matt Schaub to set up the winning drive, which took nine plays and covered 38 yards.

Baseball

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona was forced to miss a game Thursday against the Houston Astros after having eye surgery earlier in the day. The team said the operation was unexpected. He was slated to return Friday.

Golf

Ashleigh Buhai of South Africa shot a 7- under 65 to take a one- stroke lead in the first round of the Women’s British Open at Woburn Golf Club in Milton Keynes, England.

• Byeong Hun An and Sungjae Im each shot 8- under 62 to share the lead after one round at the Wyndham Championsh­ip, the final event before the FedEx Cup playoffs. Former Wyndham winners Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson joined Jordan Spieth with 64s at Sedgefield in Greensboro, N. C.

• Police arrested European Ryder Cup player Thorbjorn Olesen on suspicion of sexually assaulting a female passenger while she was asleep on a flight to London, intoxicati­on and failing to comply with the orders from the airline crew, British newspapers reported.

Connecticu­t beat Phoenix, 68- 62, in WNBA action. The Sun ( 15- 6) has won six games in a row to remain atop the WNBA standings.
