School board names assistant superintendent
Will oversee secondary education
The North Allegheny school board on July 17 approved the appointment of Melissa Friez as assistant superintendent of secondary education.
She will assume the position Aug. 19. Mrs. Friez replaces David Christopher, who will become superintendent of Cumberland Valley School District.
Mrs. Friez has been assistant superintendent of student support services for Pittsburgh Public Schools for five years.
In that position, she oversees counselors, social workers, athletics, code of conduct, positive behavior intervention and support services, Early College in High School, Title IX, the district’s crisis response team, and a variety of other services that support student academic, social and emotional needs.
She previously served as assistant superintendent of instructional leadership in the Pittsburgh district, overseeing four high schools, five 6- 12 schools, and three specialty schools; principal of Allderdice High School and mentor principal in the Pittsburgh Emerging Leaders Academy.
Mrs. Friez earned a bachelor’ s degree in English literature and psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s degree in secondary English education from Duquesne University and aK -12 principal certification from Carlow University.
She received her superintendent’s letter of eligibility from the University of Pittsburgh, where she is working on her dissertation in pursuit of a doctoral degree in administrative and policy studies.
“Mrs. Friez’s experience will be an invaluable resource to North Allegheny as we continue to grow, provide innovative opportunities for our students and staff, and prepare all students for success in a changing world,” said Superintendent Robert Scherrer. “Her familiarity and leadership in secondary education will be a great asset to the district and our administrative team.”
