Host Washington rolls at PONY Series

Host Washington, Pa., made history again Sunday by becoming the first Washington County team to win two consecutiv­e games due to the 10- run rule in its PONY League World Series history.

The hosts defeated Simi Valley, Calif., in the first game of the third day of competitio­n, 11- 1. Washington was coming off a 23- 3 victory against London.

Washington scored three runs in the top of the first, highlighte­d by a two- run single by Andrew Kocan.

Starter Matthew Smith went four innings with two strikeouts and surrendere­d just one run on three hits and three walks.

Hagerstown, Md., was eliminated in a pitcher’s duel with Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico, 3- 0. Edwin Cervantes started for Mexico and struck out seven of the first eight hitters he faced and had 11 strikeouts total. … Brownsvill­e, Texas, stole and pitched its way to victory against London, as it collected a record 18 stolen bases and gave up only one hit in a 12- 2 victory.

Tennis

Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian to win the Rogers Cup in 50 years when Serena Williams retired because of an injury in Toronto. Andreescu was up 3- 1 in the first set when Williams called for a medical timeout. Williams retired less than a minute later. … Rafael Nadal, 33, won his fifth Rogers Cup title, beating Daniil Medvedev, 6- 3, 6- 0, in just 70 minutes in Montreal.

The Minnesota Vikings traded an undisclose­d draft pick to the Baltimore Ravens for former Marshall University kicker Kaare Vedvik.

Women’s basketball

Chelsea Gray scored 26 points and host Los Angeles ( 15- 8) beat Chicago ( 1410), 84- 81, in WNBA play. … Alysha Clark scored 21 points and Seattle ( 14- 11) spoiled New York’s ( 8- 15) lone regular- season game at Barclays Center, 84- 69. … Emma Meesseman scored 25 points as host Washington ( 17- 7) defeated Minnesota ( 12- 12), 101- 78. … Liz Cambage scored 10 of her 21 points in the fourth to help host Las Vegas ( 159) beat Connecticu­t ( 16- 7).

Mi Jung Hur won the Ladies Scottish Open in North Berwick, Scotland, for her third LPGA Tour title, closing with a 5- under 66 in wet conditions for a four- stroke victory over fellow South Korean player Jeongeun Lee and Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn. … Gabriela Ruffels became the first Australian winner in U. S. Women’s Amateur history, beating Albane Valenzuela of Switzerlan­d, 1 up, at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.

• A National Women’s Soccer League record 25,218 fans watched the Portland Thorns beat the North Carolina Courage, 2- 1, at Providence Park in Portland, Ore. The game featured numerous stars from the U. S. national team.

Olympics

The U. S. men’s volleyball team, ranked second in the world, qualified for the Summer Olympics by beating the Netherland­s, 25- 18, 25- 20, 17- 25, 25- 21, to go unbeaten in the roundrobin Tokyo Volleyball Qualificat­ion Tournament in Rotterdam.
