Brett’s late goal lifts Riverhound­s to win

Riverhound­s SC defeated the first- place New York Red Bulls II, 2- 1, Wednesday at MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, N. J.

New York ( 14- 5- 5) scored first with a goal from Tom Barlow in the 20th minute, but the Riverhound­s ( 11- 3- 8) rallied with goals from Joe Greenspan ( 36th minute) and Neco Brett ( 84th minute).

“I think the goal woke us up,” head coach Bob Lilley said. “The last 15 minutes of the first half we were more positive. It was a tight game. Fortunatel­y, we got the winning goal in the second half. We did a good job closing the game once we got the lead as well.”

Backup goalkeeper Adrian turned penalty hero with a save on the final kick of the shootout as Liverpool beat Chelsea, 5- 4 on penalties, in Istanbul to win the Super Cup, which matches the Champions League winner ( Liverpool) against the Europa League winner ( Chelsea). The score was tied 2- 2 after extra time.

• Players for the World Cup champion women’s national team said mediation talks with the U. S. Soccer Federation in their dispute over equal pay are over and they look forward to a jury trial.

Tennis

Fourth- seeded Simona Halep had no problems with her left Achilles as she rallied to beat Ekaterina Alexandrov­a, 3- 6, 7- 5, 6- 4, at the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio. Halep had dropped out of the Rogers Cup quarterfin­als last week because of the injury. … In the men’s bracket, qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka knocked off sixth- seeded Kei Nishikori, 7- 6 ( 2), 6- 4.

Auto racing

Citing a desire to spend more time with his family, veteran NASCAR driver David Ragan, 33, will scale back his racing schedule starting next season and race only part time. Ragan made his Cup debut in 2007 and has two wins in 457 career Cup starts.

Baseball

A five- run first inning helped Simi Valley, Calif., flip the script from its opening game and eliminate host Washington, Pa., 12- 2, from the PONY League World Series at Lew Hays PONY Field. Washington defeated Simi Valley, 11- 1, Saturday.

• Yi Lei Sun hit a home run in the top of the seventh to send Chinese Taipei to a 5- 4 win against Youngstown and a spot in the championsh­ip game at 7 p. m. Thursday against Bay County, Mich., which eliminated Simi Valley, Calif., 2- 1.

Pro basketball

Tyronn Lue, who coached Cleveland to the 2016 championsh­ip, is engaged in talks with the Los Angeles Clippers about joining coach Doc Rivers’ staff as a top assistant.

• The Washington Wizards continued their front office overhaul by hiring Antawn Jamison, who played six seasons for the Wizards, as director of pro personnel. He spent the past two seasons as a scout for the Los Angeles Lakers.
