Andy Ogletree won the U. S. Amateur, rallying to beat John Augenstein, 2 and 1, Sunday in Pinehurst, N. C.

Ogletree was 4 down early in the morning round of the 36- hole final at Pinehurst’s renovated No. 4, but won four of the final seven holes on the No. 2 course to claim the championsh­ip matchup of 21- year- old college seniors.

Doug Barron became the 13th Monday qualifier to win a PGA Tour Champions event, holing two 15- foot birdie putts to beat Fred Couples by two strokes in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open in Endicott, N. Y. … Thomas Pieters shot a 3- under 68 in Vysoky Ujezd, Czech Republic, to become the first golfer to win the Czech Masters twice.

Baseball

Colorado Rockies righthande­r Scott Oberg, 28, who recently replaced Wade Davis as closer, has been treated for a blood clot in his pitching arm for the second time in his career.

• The Washington Nationals put struggling closer Sean Doolittle on the 10- day injured list with right knee tendinitis, a day after he gave up three home runs in the ninth against Milwaukee, his sixth blown save.

• The Cincinnati Reds placed first baseman Joey Votto on the 10- day injured list with lower back tightness. Votto was on a sixgame hitting streak before his back tightened up.

• Loudon South, Va., of the Southeast Region recorded its second no- hitter, this time topping Coon Rapids, Minn., of the Midwest, 11- 0, in a four- inning win at the Little League World Series in Williamspo­rt, Pa. Justin Lee was dominant, pitching all four innings. He struck out six and walked two.

• Chofu, Japan, defeated Epitacio Torres, Mexico, 5- 0, as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Japan started Yuto Kakeba before putting Ritsu Nishikawa in, then closing with Yuto Misaki. The three pitchers combined to strike out 12.

• Chung Nam from South Korea jumped ahead in the bottom of the third and then the Asia- Pacific team scored three more to secure the 4- 0 victory against Curacao.

Auto racing

Will Power won at Pocono Raceway, the 13th consecutiv­e season he has won an IndyCar race, after it was called with 72 laps left because of lightning and severe weather.

Courtney Williams scored 18 points and the Connecticu­t Sun ( 19- 8) beat the visiting Dallas Wings

( 9- 18), 78- 68, to clinch a spot in the WNBA postseason. … Elena Delle Donne scored 25 points and the Washington Mystics ( 20- 7) made a league- record 18 3- pointers in a 107- 68 win against the visiting Indiana Fever ( 8- 17).

Soccer

Former England defender Ashley Cole, 28, announced his retirement. Cole won 13 major titles in his 20- year career, including the 2012 Champions League with Chelsea, three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.

College football

Jamie Newman, who started the first nine games last season as a freshman before a season- ending leg injury, will begin the season as Wake Forest’s starting quarterbac­k over sophomore Sam Hartman, who led a Birmingham Bowl victory against Memphis.

• Freshman quarterbac­k Sam Howell will start working with the firstteam offense in preseason practices. Head coach Mack Brown said Howell’s consistenc­y had given him an edge in a three- way competitio­n with redshirt freshmen Cade Fortin and Jace Ruder.

Tennis

Madison Keys rallied late in both sets and beat Svetlana Kuznetsova, 7- 5, 7- 6

( 5), for her first Cincinnati championsh­ip in Mason, Ohio. … On the men’s side of the bracket, Daniil Medvedev beat David Goffin, 7- 6 ( 3), 6- 4, for his first Masters 1000 title.

Jack Whitaker, whose Hall of Fame broadcasti­ng career ranged from the first Super Bowl to Secretaria­t’s Triple Crown to short essays from major sporting events, died Sunday of natural causes in his sleep in Devon, Pa. He was 95. See obituary,
