Jets’ quarterback woes continue with injury to Siemian
The Jets’ quarterback woes just got a bit worse.
Trevor Siemian will be sidelined for the rest of the season with an ankle injury, and third-stringer Luke Falk will start Sunday for New York at New England — and beyond until Sam Darnold returns from illness.
Coach Adam Gase said that Siemian has ligament damage, suffered in the 23-3 loss Monday night to the Cleveland Browns.
“We’re still going through the procedures as far as surgery options,” Gase said. “So, obviously, we’ll have to address our quarterback position from here on out.”
Darnold said he’s feeling much better while recovering from mononucleosis and hopes to return in Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The 22-year-old quarterback said he was unsure how he contracted the illness, but added that he began feeling some effects from it the night before the Jets’ season-opening loss to Buffalo.
Darnold was 28 of 41 for 175 yards and a touchdown in that game.
Panthers
Cam Newton’s status for Sunday’s game at Arizona is uncertain after he reaggravated a mid-foot sprain. Coach Ron Rivera gave no timetable for Newton’s potential return. Rivera said backup Kyle Allen would make his second career start if Newton isn’t able to play.
Patriots
New England placed left tackle Isaiah Wynn on injured reserve, marking the latest blow to an already injury-riddled offensive line. Wynn injured his foot in a 43-0 win at Miami.
Chargers
Los Angeles signed tight end Lance Kendricks, giving the Chargers a receiving tight end to take the place of Hunter Henry, who is out for an extended period after injuring a knee against Indianapolis.
Eagles
Wide receiver DeSean Jackson has an abdominal strain that is expected to sideline him for two weeks.
