1890 The first Army-Navy football game was played at West Point, N.Y. Navy defeated Army, 24-0.

1910 British explorer Robert F. Scott’s ship Terra Nova set sail from New Zealand, carrying Scott’s expedition on its ultimately futile — as well as fatal — race to reach the South Pole first.

1943 Contracts for the long-planned Pitt Parkway — later known as the Penn-Lincoln Parkway or Parkway East — were signed in Harrisburg, but the start of constructi­on was postponed until the end of World War II. The cost for the 9½-mile road was estimated at $20 million.

1947 The U.N. General Assembly passed a resolution calling for the partitioni­ng of Palestine between Arabs and Jews. Thirty-three members, including the U.S., voted in favor of the resolution; 13 voted against while 10 abstained. (The plan, rejected by the Arabs, was never implemente­d.)

1951 The first mass transit study conducted under the sponsorshi­p of the Allegheny Conference on Community Developmen­t urged reconsider­ation of a Triangle subway estimated to cost $65 million. 1963 President Lyndon B. Johnson named a commission headed by Earl Warren to investigat­e the assassinat­ion of President John F. Kennedy.

2018 As he headed to the Group of 20 Nations summit in Argentina, President Donald Trump abruptly canceled a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing Russia’s seizure of Ukrainian vessels. (Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin ended up talking briefly on the sidelines of the summit.)
