GIFTS FOR SENIORS

-

Here are some gadgets and gifts to make a senior’s life easier and safer.

As you age, you tend to slow down and so does your metabolism. The Sunpentown International infrared blood circulation massager uses highfrequency vibration, magnetism and infrared heat to increase blood flow and speed metabolism by massaging acupuncture points. $96.46 at www.sunpentown.com or Amazon.com.

Many seniors have dogs or cats but find it difficult to take them to pet groomers. Why not have the groomer come to them? Local mobile pet groomers include House Call Pet Grooming in the North Hills (412-926-5211), Pawsitively Perfect in the South Hills (www.pittsburghmobilegrooming.com) and Larry’s Mobile Doggie Day Spa in the west (412-534-4052). Prices and services vary.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a membership-based learning program for people over 50 who want to continue their journey of learning but don’t want the hassle of grades, tests and degree requirements. For a yearly fee, members choose from a variety of courses along with selected offerings from the school’s academic catalog. Instructors include faculty members, retirees and community experts. Osher is offered at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, but costs, courses and other requirements differ. For more information, go to olli.pitt.edu or cmu.edu/osher/.

Has your favorite senior ever met a penguin, sloth or flamingo? Give an Encounter Experience at the National Aviary on the North Side. Prices range between $40 or $275 or a one-year senior membership is $60 at www.aviary.org or 412-258-9445.

Imagine using one device to make video calls to grandkids and set up reminders for everything from doctors’ appointments to when a favorite TV show is about to start. The Nest Hub with Google Assistant can turn household devices on and off, use voice control to access your favorite songs, check the weather or take another look at family photos. $229 at store.google.com or at Best Buy, Target and Lowe’s stores.

Who doesn’t enjoy a delicious hot meal, especially when someone else does the work? A gift card from Pittsburgh Fresh, a local food delivery company, offers a variety of freshly made and nutritious meals with a choice of entrees, a la carte items, snacks, desserts and drinks. There are 12 available subscriptions, and special dietary needs can be met. Gift cards available in any amount at www.pghfresh.com or 412-341-4626.
