West Allegheny finds range
Indians convert 12 3-pointers in big win vs. No. 2 Quaker Valley
Joe Pustover hit five of West Allegheny’s 12 3-pointers and finished with 23 points, while Jackson Faulk had seven of his 24 in the fourth quarter as West Allegheny (5-4) dealt Class 4A No. 2 Quaker Valley (5-1) its first loss with a 92-82 come-from-behind non-section victory.
Indians junior guard Liam Routch also came alive in the fourth quarter with 13 of his 16 in the final frame as the Indians overcame a 6965 deficit after three quarters.
K.C. Johns helped Quaker Valley to its early lead with 18 of his gamehigh 26 in the first quarter.
Other games
■ Worthington-Kilbourne certainly had a worthwhile trip across Ohio’s eastern border into Western Pennsylvania. A day after handling Class 5A No. 2 Shaler in the opening game of the Bethel Park tournament, the Wolves took their hosts to overtime and dealt the Black Hawks an 89-87 loss in three extra frames. Ayden Parsons scored 27 points in the win and had 49 in the two games to lead Worthington-Kilbourne, which went 30 for 40 from the freethrow line in the game. Bethel Park was 18 for 20 from the stripe and was led by senior Ryan Meis, who went for a game-high 31, while Tommy DiRienzo, fresh off a 27-point first half Friday against Sto-Rox, had 27 against the Wolves.
■ Aquinas Academy (2-6 ) freshman Vinny Cugini had a game-high 32 points, but St. Joseph’s junior guard Andrew Sullivan had 21 of his 31 in the first half and racked up the 1,000th point in his career to lead the Spartans (3-7) to a 78-70 victory.
■ Cole Stanley was hot from the outside as he hit six of Canon-McMillan’s 12 3pointers and finished with 24, but senior Jordane Adams went for 26 and Michael Koroly had 20 to help Class 5A No. 4 Trinity (7-2) pull out a 78-72 win against the Big Macs (2-6) in their second meeting of the season.
■ Class 2A No. 5 Brentwood (8-0) got pushed by a team in a higher classification for the second game in a row, but the Spartans stayed perfect as Zach Keib scored a game-high 31 points to carry them to a 5447 win over Class 4A Hopewell (5-4).
■ Zach Rocco had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Ben Myers finished with 16, but Penn-Trafford (7-2), which trailed by five at the intermission, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and could not complete the comeback. Deamonte Diggs scored 17 points and Brison Kisan added 15 to help rival McKeesport (5-3) to a 49-47 victory in the Warriors tournament.
■ Mekhi Reynolds had five 3-pointers and scored 23 points as Shaler (6-3) rebounded from its loss to Worthington-Kilbourne with a 66-65 triumph against StoRox (3-6).
