Central Valley tops Beaver in showdown

A marquee matchup of highly ranked teams produced a low-scoring affair in the championsh­ip of the C.J. Betters tournament.

Class 4A No. 3-ranked Central Valley and 3A No. 1 Beaver clamped down defensivel­y before the Warriors (70) were able to escape with a 37-27 win. The Warriors defeated the Bobcats in this tournament a year ago.

Central Valley’s Christiane Frye poured in nearly half of her team’s points with 18. Emma Pavelek of Beaver (71) scored 11.

■ Rochester’s Jasmine

Mack scored 13 points, including the winner with 2 seconds remaining, to lift the 1A No. 1 Rams (9-1) to a 46-45 win against Ellwood City at the Laurel tournament. Kayla Servick netted 13 of her game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter to spur the upset bid by the Wolverines (1-7).

■ Kamryn Kelly knocked down a free throw with 0.1 seconds left in the game to give Derry a 47-46 victory against Bishop Canevin (44) at the Mount Pleasant tournament. Kelly finished with 13 points to lead the Trojans (5-4). The Crusaders’ Diajha Allen had 14.

■ Montour (5-4) outscored Hopewell (4-4), 18 -13, in the fourth quarter to escape with a 57-54 victory at the Riverside tournament. Raegan Kadlecik scored 9 of her game-high 26 points in the decisive final quarter.

■ North Catholic (6-0) became the second top-ranked WPIAL squad in as many days to edge Altoona. Tess Myers netted 21 points to lead the Trojanette­s, No. 1 in 4A, to a 54-47 triumph. The Mountains were outlasted by 6A No. 1 North Allegheny Friday night.

■ City League No. 1 Allderdice survived a late surge from Mars and won, 70-65, at the Hempfield tournament. Nautica Burwell’s 14 points led the Dragons. Mars’ Bella Pelaia had 27 points, including 22 in the second half.

Stars of the night

■ Mya Murray of Uniontown racked up 36 points in a 65-44 win against Washington at the Laurel Highlands tournament. Murray, a Brown recruit, showed off her all-around game by connecting on eight 2-pointers, two 3s and going 14 of 19 from the free-throw line.

■ Jhayla Bray, who stands just 5-feet-7, had another huge game as she racked up 32 points and 29 rebounds for McKeesport, which fell to Penn-Trafford, 75-62, at the Penn-Trafford tournament.
