Serena to play for U.S. in Fed Cup qualifier

Serena Williams will be part of the U.S. team for its Fed Cup qualifier against Latvia, the U.S. Tennis Associatio­n said Wednesday.

It will be the first time Williams has participat­ed in the Fed Cup since 2018. Williams has played in 10 previous Fed Cup competitio­ns, and is 13-0 in singles and 3-2 in doubles since her first appearance in 1999.

The U.S. will face Latvia Feb. 7-8 in Everett, Wash., and the winner will advance to the Fed Cup final in April in Budapest, Hungary.

Baseball

The New York Yankees traded left-hander Stephen Tarpley, who was acquired in a trade with the Pirates in 2016 for Ivan Nova, to the Miami Marlins for third baseman James Nelson and $50,000 payable on Feb. 15.

Soccer

Riverhound­s SC signed defender/midfielder Tony Walls to a one-year contract with a club option for the 2021 season. Walls was the captain of Bob Lilley’s 2015 Rochester Rhinos championsh­ip team that lost just one game all season, and he most recently played for the Chattanoog­a Red Wolves SC of USL League One in 2019.

• Borussia Dortmund promoted 17-year-old American Gio Reyna — the son of former U.S. internatio­nals Claudio Reyna and Danielle Egan Reyna — to its first team. Dortmund signed the midfielder from New York City FC in July. Since then he has scored eight goals in 16 games for Dortmund’s under-19 team.

Auto racing

In his first major move since buying Indianapol­is Motor Speedway, Roger Penske announced the Xfinity Series race July 4 will use the track’s road course. The Cup Series race, the Brickyard 400 on July 5, will remain on the track’s 2 1⁄2-mile oval.

Boxing

The Western Pennsylvan­ia Police Athletic League will hold weigh-ins for the 2020 Golden Gloves season from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 25 at Gloria’s Gym at Monroevill­e Mall. For informatio­n call or text, 412-576-9285.

Driver Ed McNeight Jr. passed $10 million in career purses with a victory in the seventh race at The Meadows in Washington, Pa. It was career win 3,516 for McNeight and lifted his total purses to $10,001,903.
