Atlanta’s Parsons might not play again

-

Chandler Parsons’ attorneys is saying the Atlanta Hawks forward suffered “severe and permanent injuries” in a car wreck last week that could jeopardize his career.

Attorneys John Morgan and Nick Panagakis of the firm Morgan & Morgan said the injuries Parsons suffered in a crash Wednesday include a traumatic brain injury, disk herniation and a torn labrum. Parsons was leaving practice when he was hit by a driver who the attorneys said was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Sgt. John Chafee of the Atlanta Police Department said the police report was not available Monday because the public affairs unit was closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday.

The Hawks said last week that Parsons suffered a concussion and whiplash. The team has added “associated disk injury” to his list of injuries.

Parsons remains in the concussion protocol and was not with the team Monday for a game against the Toronto Raptors. He was not on the bench for the team’s past two games against San Antonio and Detroit.

Parsons’ attorneys said in a statement released Monday that the other driver “admitted drinking, had alcohol in the car with him” and “passed out” after the crash. The attorneys say the driver, who was not identified, is responsible for “seriously injuring and potentially ending Mr. Parsons’ career as a professional athlete.”

Parsons, 31, acquired in the summer from the Memphis Grizzlies, has played just five games for the Hawks. He is averaging 2.8 points and is making more than $25 million in the final year of his contract.

76ers

Ben Simmons tied a career high with 34 points and added 12 rebounds and 12 assists, carrying visiting Philadelphia to a 117-111 victory against Brooklyn. Simmons, the Eastern Conference player of the week for the previous week, got a good start on winning the award next week, too. He shot 12 for 14 from the field in his career-best fifth consecutive game with 20 or more points, finishing with his fourth triple-double of this season.

Bucks

Giannis Antetokounmpo had a triple-double and scored his 10,000th career point as host Milwaukee beat the Chicago Bulls, 111-98, to sweep the four-game season series. Antetokounmpo had 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for his fourth triple-double of the season. He reached 10,000 points with 4:30 remaining in the fourth.

Nets

Guard Kyrie Irving missed Brooklyn’s game against Philadelphia because of right hamstring tightness. Coach Kenny Atkinson said Irving was feeling soreness Sunday and then was checked again Monday before the team decided the All-Star point guard wouldn’t play. Atkinson said the Nets were choosing to be cautious because they didn’t want to risk losing Irving for the long term. Irving missed 26 games with a right shoulder injury before returning Jan. 12 against Atlanta. He is averaging 26.5 points in his first season in Brooklyn.
