Why target women of a certain age?

-

I just read one of those online click-bait articles with advertisements — “What you shouldn’t wear past 40” — aimed, naturally, at women.

In an aptly named nutshell, the article says: Don’t wear chokers. They draw attention to your neck. You know — that ugly creased thing that holds your head up? If you must have a neck, cover it with an attractive scarf.

Don’t wear bright colors. They draw attention to you. God forbid, past 40, you should even want anyone to see you. Your vibrant days are over. It’s time for you to blend in with the crowd. Or better yet, master the art of invisibility.

Don’t wear short skirts. You may think your gams are gorgeous, but who wants to look at legs that have been around the block a few times?

Don’t wear plunging necklines. Who wants to see your ugly age spots and questionable moles up close and personal?

Don’t wear sequins. How dare you try and look festive, you old hag? And while we’re at it, don’t even think about anything that sparkles.

Don’t wear UGG boots outside. Apparently, even your very-covered feet are unsightly.

If you can’t tell by now, these tips leave me boiling mad. It’s not enough that women are confronted with anti-aging products of every kind. Now we’re told how we must present ourselves to the world.

It’s ironic. In an age where every “ism” is being challenged, and rightly so, and all kinds of people are learning the beauty of self-acceptance, sexist ageism thrives. The truth is, we hate older women who look the part.

I want to confront whoever penned these vicious “tips.” Preferably in a low-cut neon, sequined mini-dress, looking every bit my 67 years. Squirrel Hill
