Three suspended after Knicks, Grizzlies melee

Jaren Jackson Jr. and Marko Guduric of the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks guard Elfrid Payton were suspended one game without pay Thursday for their roles in an altercatio­n Wednesday between the two teams.

Payton was given a flagrant-2 foul and ejected. He said he would do the same thing again, believing Grizzlies forward Jae Crowder was disrespect­ing the game.

New York’s Marcus Morris also was fined $35,000 for his role on the court and for his comments afterward when he said Crowder played with “female tendencies.”

Golf

Stephen Ames shot a 9-under 63 to take a fourstroke lead at the Morocco Champions, the first PGA Tour Champions event in Africa at Marrakech, Morocco. Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomeri­e, Jose Maria Olazabal and Retief Goosen shot 67.

• Graeme McDowell and Gavin Green shared the lead at the Saudi Internatio­nal by shooting 6-under 64 in the first round. McDowell birdied the final three holes on the course next to the Red Sea.

• Wyndham Clark shot a career-best 10-under 61 to take the first-round lead in the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Arizona.

• The LPGA says it has canceled the Blue Bay LPGA event scheduled for the first week of March on Hainan Island in China, citing health concerns due to the viral outbreak.

Hockey

Tomas Hertl will miss the rest of the season for San Jose with a knee injury. The Sharks said Hertl tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee Wednesday night in a loss against Vancouver.

Auto racing

Tony Kanaan will close his popular IndyCar career on a farewell tour of oval tracks and the Indianapol­is 500 this season.

Pittsburgh’s leading women in athletics are teaming up for the second annual Pittsburgh Girls and Women in Sports Day event 6 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Thelma Lovette YMCA. The focus is to celebrate women in sports and to inspire female athletes in Pittsburgh. In addition to a panel discussion, the event will feature representa­tives from seven local women’s sports teams.
