The past week: Montue scored 28 points in a 47-43 victory against Mars, and 23 points in a 44-37 win against Franklin Regional.
Check this out: Montue is a 5-foot-11 junior forward who entered the week as the fourth-leading scorer in the WPIAL at 23.1 points a game. She can stuff a stat sheet. She also averages 11 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks a game while shooting 52% from the field. She has
led a turnaround at Plum. The Mustangs entered the week with an 11-4 record and in first place in Class 5A Section 2. Montue, who has scholarship offers from Marshall, Mount St. Mary’s and Oakland, also is an excellent student with a 3.7 grade average.
Have you always been such a versatile player? Yeah. When it comes to school basketball, the team really relies on me. There’s pressure on me to do
a lot. When I play AAU, we kind of all rely on each other. It’s different in school ball.
Do you play everywhere for Plum? I usually play inside because I’m the biggest one. The thing about my play is I can work inside out, but also outside in. That’s why teams say it’s hard to guard me.
But your future is as a guard? Probably the 2 or 3 position.
If I asked you the best part of your game, what would it be? Ummm ... Honestly, I’d say my assists. One of my strongest abilities is to take the ball to the rack. But even if I take it to the rack, if I see someone open, I’ll pass it. I don’t make it all about me. Where were you when found out about Kobe Bryant? I was taking a nap and my brother shook me and woke me. He said, ‘you’re not going to believe what happened. Kobe died.’ Honestly, it broke my heart. He was my idol.
Are high school kids old enough to realize how good he was? I’ve watched basketball since the day I was born. A lot of younger people didn’t see him play that much. They won’t know so much about who he was, but he changed basketball in my opinion. I know kids will still be shouting “Kobe!” when they shoot or throw something in the trash can.
Did you cry? Yes, more than once.
