Diggs’ tip gives McKeesport victory vs. Woodland Hills

McKeesport needed a baseball pass to win its Class 5A Section 1 basketball game Friday night against Woodland Hills, 56-55.

After the Wolverines’ Kyere Haineswort­h knocked down a 10-foot jump shot with two seconds remaining, the fifth-ranked Tigers (11-8, 8-2) lofted a baseball pass off the inbounds that bounced off the backboard and Deamontae Diggs tipped in his own miss off the rebound for the victory. Diggs finished with a game-high 18 points. Woodland Hills fell to 8-12 overall and 5-6 in the section.

• Stingy Fox Chapel allowed a season high in points, but that didn’t matter as the 6A No. 1 Foxes (19-0, 9-0) stayed unbeaten with a 71-57 Section 3 triumph against Penn-Trafford (11-8, 4-5). Fox Chapel’s Arnold Vento posted 22 points.

• West Allegheny (11-9, 6-6) picked up its pace in the second half, while West Mifflin (1-17, 0-11) went cold in the third quarter, allowing the Indians to pull away for a 75-52 victory. West Allegheny’s Jackson Faulk had six 3-pointers and scored 22 of his 29 points in the second half.

• Trinity (12-7, 7-5) raced to a 23-10 firstquart­er lead against Thomas Jefferson (127, 8-4) before securing a 76-56 victory in 5A Section 2. The Hillers got 21 points from Michael Koroly and 19 apiece from Dylan King and Jordane Adams.

• City League No. 1 Allderdice (16-4, 9-0) got a stiff test from Brashear (7-9, 5-4), but the Dragons won the showdown, 70-64, behind 23 points from Tony Henderson. Cheron Collington of Brashear led all scorers with 33 points.

• The WPIAL’s leading scorer was at it again, but he had some competitio­n. Aquinas Academy (5-14, 2-10) freshman Vinnie Cugini put up 40 points, however St. Joseph’s Andrew Sullivan netted a careerhigh 35 and his Spartans (6-14, 4-8) won the 1A Section 3 clash, 82-72.

• Class 2A No. 5 Shenango (15-4, 7-3) had four players in double figures, topped by Jason Kraner’s 16 points, as the Wildcats defeated South Side Beaver (9-10, 5-6), 6440, in Section 3.

• Christian McGowan poured in 12 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter to push 1A No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (15-4, 11-1) past Propel Andrew Street (313, 3-9), 61-49, in Section 3.

• Imani Christian kept its pace near the top of 1A Secton 3 with a 72-58 win at Clairton (12-7, 9-3). Senique Jenkins put up 25 points for the Saints (13-7, 11-1).

• Brentwood (14-4, 9-2) picked up its fourth consecutiv­e win after slipping by California (10-8, 5-5), 58-56, in 2A Section 2. C.J. Ziegler led the way with 28 points.

• Isaiah Langston posted 22 points and 12 rebounds and his Cornell (13-4, 10-2) squad bested Union (11-7, 6-6), 67-45, in 1A Section 1.

• A 19-point effort by Isiah Warfield lifted Central Valley (10-7) to a 73-52 non-section victory against Bishop Canevin (15-4).

• Mekhi Reynolds led all scorers with 21 points and his 5A No. 4 Shaler (13-7, 10-2) squad defeated Armstrong (4-14, 2-9) in Section 3, 56-51.

• Class 6A No. 5 Pine-Richland (13-6, 63) got a fight from North Hills (7-11, 3-6), but the Rams emerged with a 62-52 victory in Section 1. Pine-Richland’s Kyle Polce had 19 points. The Indians’ Alex Smith and Devin Burgess each had 15 points.

• Class 4A No. 1 Highlands (18-2, 8-1) blew past Mount Pleasant (11-9, 5-4) for a 70-43

Section 1 triumph. Korry Myers drilled four 3pointers and paced the Rams with 18 points.

Milestone

• Mt. Lebanon’s Jake Hoffman hit the 1,000-point milestone in the third quarter for the Blue Devils (15-4, 9-0) in their 66-45 victory against Peters Township (10-9, 4-5) in 6A Section 2. Hoffman nailed five 3s and finished with 23 points.

• Chauncie Mickens became the seventh player in Carlynton (13-5, 7-3) history to score 1,000 career points when he netted a game-high 21 in a 72-54 loss to 3A No. 2 North Catholic (16-2, 10-0) in Section 2. Mickens now has 1,013 for his career.

Stars of the night

• A Northgate Flames player was on fire from behind the arc. Ben Brooks knocked down 11 3-pointers that accounted for all of his game-high 33 points, as the Flames (614, 4-8) edged Summit Academy (6-11, 48), 70-69, in 2A Section 1. Brooks was 11 for 17 from long distance.

• Cam Nusser drilled nine 3s on his way to a 37-point night for Belle Vernon (15-5, 72), which defeated Ringgold (11-8, 4-5), 8071, in 4A Section 3.
