OF, Price go to Dodgers; Twins 3rd team in deal

-

Mookie Betts, David Price headed to Dodgers in multi-team trade.

The Boston Red Sox traded outfielder Mookie Betts — the best position player the franchise has produced in decades — and pitcher David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the blockbuster deal Tuesday night.

ESPN reported that the deal was pending a review of medical information and that the Minnesota Twins also were involved in the transaction.

The Dodgers will send pitcher Kenta Maeda to the Twins, who will trade prospect Brusdar Graterol to the Red Sox, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. He also reported that the key piece going back to the Red Sox is outfielder Alex Verdugo.

In a separate deal, the Dodgers will send Joc Pederson to the Los Angeles Angels for infielder Luis Rengifo, both Rosenthal and ESPN reported.

The Red Sox likely made the move because they believed they had no chance to retain Betts, 27, beyond this season, having tried but failed to reach agreement on a long-term extension. Radio station WEEI recently reported that the sides were more than $100 million apart in their most recent talks.

Phillies

Philadelphia will retire the late Hall of Fame pitcher Roy Halladay’s No. 34 this season. The Phillies will pay tribute to Halladay on May 29, 2020, the 10th anniversary of his perfect game against the Marlins. It was the 20th perfect game in MLB history. Halladay was 40 when he was killed in a plane crash in November 2017.

Giants

Infielder Wilmer Flores and San Francisco are in agreement on a multiyear contract. Flores, 28, hit .317/.361/.487 with the Arizona Diamondbacks last year and could be in line to play second base or a utility role with the Giants.

Marlins

Former Pirates infielder Sean Rodriguez and Miami are in agreement on a minor league deal. Rodriguez, 34, played every position last season for the Phillies except catcher — and even had 1⅓ scoreless innings as a pitcher.

Rangers

Texas and first baseman Greg Bird have agreed to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. Bird, a left-handed hitter with power, has a history of injuries. He was limited to 10 games last season because of a plantar fascia tear in his left foot.

Braves

Atlanta and first baseman Yonder Alonso agreed to a minor league deal. Atlanta has not announced the deal, which is expected to include a non-roster invite to spring training. Alonso, 32, split time between the Chicago White Sox and Colorado Rockies in 2019, struggling to a .199/.296/.346 slash line.
