Blackhawk falls short in bid to win 1st outright section title since 2003
Blackhawk was trying to win its first outright section championship since 2003. The Cougars will have to try again after falling to Quaker Valley, 71-59, in a battle between the two teams atop the Class 4A Section 2 standings Tuesday night.
Markus Frank had 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Jon Weir added 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Quakers (15-5, 8-3). Ryan Heckathorn led all scorers with 29 points for Blackhawk (8-10, 8-3), which split the regular-season series with Quaker Valley.
Other top boys games
• Upper St. Clair beat Mt. Lebanon, 53-48, but the Blue Devils (15-5, 9-1) already wrapped up the Class 6A Section 2 championship. Luke Gensler paced the Panthers (18-3, 8-2) with 19 points.
• For the first time since 2015, Hopewell (8-13, 1-10) won a section game. The Vikings edged Beaver (6-14, 1-10), 47-46, in Class 4A Section 2.
• In a match of teams at the top of Class 5A Section 1, Penn Hills (16-4, 10-1) crushed McKeesport, 82-48. The Indians outscored the Tigers (11-9, 8-3) by 43-15 spanning the second and third quarters. Kyree Mitchell led Penn Hills with 25 points.
• Gamal Marballie capped a 27-point night by hitting his fifth 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Yough (7-13, 2-8) to a 46-45 win against Mount Pleasant in Class 4A Section 1. The Vikings (11-10, 5-5) had gained the lead in the third quarter after a 20-6 run.
• Greensburg Central Catholic (16-4, 12-1) pulled ahead of Imani Christian (13-8, 112) in Class 1A Section 3 with a 67-48 win. Brevan Williams scored 17 points to lead the Centurions.
• Allderdice stayed unbeaten in the City League, downing Carrick (4-16, 1-8), 74-60. Tony Henderson’s 25 points led the Dragons (16-4, 9-0).
• Jeannette (14-7, 10-1) used a 22-10 third quarter to pull ahead of California (10-9, 5-6) and hung on for a 56-40 win in Class 2A Section 2.
Milestone
• Springdale’s Demitri Fritch hit a career milestone, notching his 1,000th career point as part of a double-double. Fritch racked up 33 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Dynamos (18-3, 121) past Summit Academy (612, 4-9), 65-53, in Class 2A Section 1. Fritch has 1,032 career points.
Star of the night
• Purdue recruit Ethan Morton flirted with a triple-double before finishing with 24 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds for Butler (16-4, 10-0) in its 76-54 win against Seneca Valley (3-16, 1-9) in Class 6A Section 1.
