Travel woes can’t slow Bearcats

Jarron Cumberland converted a go-ahead threepoint play with 3.5 seconds remaining to lift Cincinnati to an 80-79 victory against Wichita State Thursday night.

Cincinnati led for most of the game but host Wichita State took its first lead since midway through the first half on Dexter Dennis’ 3pointer with 58 seconds remaining for a 76-75 lead. Cumberland answered with two free throws before Grant Sherfield made Wichita State’s eighth 3-pointer for a two-point lead.

Cumberland, the reigning American Athletic Conference player of the year, finished with 24 points. Keith Williams had 17 points for Cincinnati (15-7, 8-2), which earned its fifth consecutive win. Chris Vogt added 12 points and three blocks, and Tre Scott had 11 rebounds.

Jaime Echenique had 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Shockers (17-5, 5-4). Dennis added 16 points and Jamarius Burton had 13 points.

Cincinnati’s charter flight to Wichita, Kan., was canceled on Wednesday evening, forcing the Bearcats to land just before noon Thursday — hours before the 6 p.m. tipoff.

Michigan

Officers found Michigan guard Zavier Simpson outside of a vehicle registered to the wife of the Wolverines athletic director around 3 a.m. Jan. 26. The car had made contact with a pole. An officer said he did not notice any smell of intoxicant from Simpson’s breath. Simpson told officers his name was Jeff Jackson Simpson, and that he had been walking and noticed the crashed vehicle. Officers recognized him and asked why he had given a different name, and Simpson said he didn’t want to be involved. Simpson told police the car belonged to Evan Manuel, a student manager for the basketball team who is the son of athletic director Warde Manuel. Police said Chrislan Manuel, his wife, spoke with Evan and told police that Simpson had been driving. Simpson said he drove the car into a pole because of icy conditions. Michigan announced Jan. 27 that Simpson was suspended for an unspecified violation of team policy. He missed one game before returning.

Florida State

Kiah Gillespie scored 25 points to lead her No. 17 Seminoles to a 67-59 upset over No. 5 Louisville. Nicki Ekhomu added 18 points, as the Seminoles (19-4, 8-4 ACC) ended Louisville’s win streak at 13 games. Florida State trailed for just 13 seconds in the game. Gillespie helped set the tone early. She scored nine of her points and grabbed 10 of her 13 rebounds in the first half. Dana Evans led Louisville with 18 points and eclipsed the 1,000-point scoring mark for her career.
