Wild third round sees Thomas jump to first

Justin Thomas started and ended his round with bogeys. He was at his best in the 16 holes between, running off eight birdies for a 6-under 65 that gave him a one-shot lead Saturday at the World Golf Championsh­ip’s Mexico Championsh­ip. Thomas was five shots behind in the middle of his front nine at Chapultepe­c Golf Club in Mexico City. He wound up with a one-shot lead over Patrick Reed and Erik Van Rooyen.

The Tampa Bay Vipers’ (0-3) first XFL home game featured a reinvigora­ted offense, but it wasn’t enough to stop the potent Houston Roughnecks (3-0) from powering to a 34-27 win. Cam Phillips caught three touchdowns from P.J. Walker, piling up 194 receiving yards. ... An unanswered 18-point run lifted the visiting Dallas Renegades (2-1) to a 24-12 win over the Seattle Dragons (1-2). Dallas quarterbac­k Landry Jones hit tight end Donald Parham for two touchdowns.

Boxing

Junior lightweigh­t Gabriel Flores Jr. (17-0, 6 KOs) scored a first-round knockdown en route to a one-sided decision victory over Matt Conway (17-2, 7 KOs) who trains out of Washington, Pa. on the undercard of the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder title-fight in Las Vegas. Two judges scored the fight 80-71, with the third scoring it 79-72.

Tennis

Top-seeded Simona Halep won her 20th singles title after prevailing in a third-set tiebreaker to beat Elena Rybakina 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the Dubai Championsh­ips final.

College football

Miami Dolphins wide receivers coach Karl Dorrell will become the new head coach at the University of Colorado. Dorrell will succeed Mel Tucker, who left for Michigan State.

College hockey

Multi-point efforts from Jaycee Gebhard and Natalie Marcuzzi helps propel the Robert Morris women to a 5-2 win over RIT at the Island Sports Center.

• The Robert Morris men earned a 4-3 win over visiting Canisius. Michael Coyne and Luke Lynch both scored while Daniel Mantenuto added an assist and scored the game winner with 52 seconds left in regulation. Justin Kapelmaste­r stopped 30 of 33 shots on goal to earn his 10th win of the season.

Soccer

Riverhound­s SC tied the University of Akron, 2-2, at Highmark Stadium in its fifth preseason match. Mark Forrest and trialist Danny Griffin posted first-half goals for the Riverhound­s.

Bobsled

Kaillie Humphries of the United States earned her third world championsh­ip, teaming with Lareen Gibbs to finish four runs over two days in Altenberg, Germany, in 3 minutes, 45.49 seconds.

Skiing

Corinne Suter of Switzerlan­d won the season-long World Cup downhill title by finishing second in a race in Crans-Montana, Switzerlan­d. Suter only needed to finish fourth to win the title. Teammate Lara GutBehrami won the race.
