Maziarz goes out on top

-

North Catholic senior Kyle Maziarz wanted to leave a legacy in his last WPIAL Class 2A diving final.

At the end of the day he left his mark. One that might stand for a long time.

Maziarz dominated the competition and led wire-towire as he smashed the WPIAL record with an 11dive score of 558.05 to defeat second-place Simon Iwanonkiw of Quaker Valley by 135.15. Andrew Cestra of Beaver set the record of 522.20 last year when he beat Maziarz by 11.70 points.

“Winning would have been amazing, but I really wanted to do was beat that record,” Maziarz said. “I wanted to leave my legacy here and I feel on top of the world right now and I know that, at least for a year, I’ll be on the leader board.”

Maziarz wasn’t the only North Catholic diver who took home a gold medal. Freshman Maggie Foley opened the day by winning the girls title with 440.45 points, 41.40 better than Seton LaSalle senior Taylor Weyrich.

“When I hit my last dive, I went into the water OK and I knew as soon as I went in the water I had it,” Foley said. “I was kind of freaking out, crying a little bit, real emotional.”

It is the first time two divers from the same school swept the Class 2A titles since Chris Lapnski and Jamie Wolf of South Park accomplished the feat in 2003.

“It was something I don’t even think our school could have imagined, to have the two of us back to back,” Maziarz said. “We dive at the same club, we’re so close and to have this relationship and to grow and succeed makes our relationship grow even stronger.”
