Heat to honor Wade, retire No. 3 jersey

-

Dwyane Wade says that whenever he would hear the national anthem play before Miami home games, he would take a moment and look to the rafters.

“I always imagined my jersey being up there,” Wade said.

He will no longer have to imagine the sight. After this weekend, it’ll be there for good.

Wade will become the fifth Heat player to get his number retired by the team, joining Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Shaquille O’Neal and Chris Bosh. A three-day celebration of Wade’s time in Miami started Friday, a weekend highlighted by his No. 3 formally going to the rafters Saturday night when the Heat plays host to the Cleveland Cavaliers at AmericanAirlines Arena. There were a night of tribute speeches Friday and there will be a showing of a documentary Sunday about Wade.

Wade spent 16 seasons in the NBA, 14½ of those with the Heat. He’s the franchise’s all-time leader in points, games, assists and steals and is probably going to keep most, if not all, of those records for a very long time. Consider: He scored 21,556 regular-season points with the Heat, and Alonzo Mourning is second with 9,459.

Center Karl-Anthony Towns will sit out for at least two more weeks because of an injured left wrist, which the team announced Friday is broken. Towns first had an X-ray after his wrist was hurt Jan. 25 against Oklahoma City. Towns played through discomfort in the next six games, posting 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds in five of those, but he was ruled out of Minnesota’s final game before the AllStar break with the injury. Further evaluation by multiple medical specialists revealed the fracture.
