BRADENTON, Fla. — Local boy John Ryan Murphy hit the Pirates’ first home run of spring training and they also got a couple of solid pitching performances, but the bullpen faltered in a loss Tuesday to the Phillies at LECOM Park.

The Pirates dropped to 0-41 in Grapefruit League play, scoring a total of 13 runs in those games.

Murphy — a Bradenton native in camp as a non-roster invitee after he signed a minorleague deal in January — supplied the only offense when the catcher went down and got a pitch from Connor Brogdon, the ball barely staying fair inside the left field foul pole.

“It was good,” manager Derek Shelton said. “Bradenton’s own. He took a couple aggressive swings, got a breaking ball or changeup and put a really good swing at it.”

On the mound

Joe Musgrove made the start and went two innings, striking out one and hitting the first batter of the game, Phillies center fielder Roman Quinn. Eighteen of Musgrove’s 25 pitches were strikes.

Musgrove ran his fastball up to 94 mph and threw all six of his pitches. He commanded five of them, with only his slider causing the occasional problem.

Still, it was a very good outing for Musgrove.

“Everything he wanted to do execution-of-plan-wise, he did,” Shelton said. “When you can see that this early in the spring, I think that shows that he had a plan and stuck to it.”

Michael Feliz, Clay Holmes and Blake Cederlind worked scoreless innings before Miguel Del Pozo and Williams Jerez combined to allow five of the six runs.

At the plate

A relatively quiet day results-wise, as the Pirates collected just six hits, two coming from starters. Gregory Polanco went 0 for 1 with a walk and put a solid swing on a ball that wound up becoming an out. The Pirates’ only other extrabase hit came courtesy of Ji Hwan Bae, who doubled in the seventh inning.

In the field

Luke Maile looked excellent behind the plate. In the first, Maile picked a ball out of the dirt and caught Quinn between first and second. Maile eventually fired a strike to Kevin Newman for the out.
