Ohio State rewards Day with 3-year extension

Ryan Day, who led Ohio State to a 13-1 record and a College Football Playoff appearance in his first year as head coach, was rewarded with a three-year contract extension and a raise.

Day, 40, is under contract through the 2026 season.

Day, who made a base salary of $4.5 million plus bonuses in 2019, will be paid $6 million for the 2020-21 season, $6.5 million in 2021 and $7.6 million in 2022. His salary for 2023-26 will be decided later.

Soccer

Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowsk­i led a devastatin­g second-half attack as Bayern Munich routed Chelsea, 3-0, in London in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 series. Gnabry, who had four goals against Tottenham in the group stage, has scored six goals in London in the competitio­n this season. … Dries Mertens tied Napoli’s all-time scoring record by curling in a first-half shot in a 1-1 tie with Barcelona in Naples, Italy. Mertens matched former Napoli captain Marek Hamsik with 121 goals in all competitio­ns.

• Switzerlan­d extended the contract of coach Vladimir Petkovic through the 2022 World Cup. Since Petkovic succeeded Ottmar Hitzfeld after the 2014 World Cup, Switzerlan­d has qualified for the final tournament in each competitio­n it entered.

The British Open is returning to Royal Troon in 2023 to commemorat­e the 100th anniversar­y of the first Open on the western Scottish links. Royal Troon last hosted the Open in 2016.
