Cardinals will be host team in Mexico City

-

The Arizona Cardinals will play a regular-season game in Mexico City this year.

The announcement Friday said that additional details, including the date and opponent, would be released later. The Cardinals were required by the NFL to play host to a game outside the United States by 2023 after being awarded the hosting rights to the Super Bowl that will be played in February 2023.

The game will be the Cardinals’ second in Mexico City. The franchise played the San Francisco 49ers in 2005 in the first regular-season NFL game held outside the United States. The Cardinals won, 3114, in front of a then-record 103,467 fans at Estadio Azteca.

Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said in a statement that the franchise is “thrilled to learn that this game will take place at Estadio Azteca where we received such an enthusiastic reception in 2005. We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from fans in Mexico and look forward to an incredible experience.”

This will be the fourth NFL game at Estadio Azteca over the past five seasons.

Dolphins

The Mexico City news means Miami will play a game in London in 2020.

The Dolphins will play one of their eight home games in London to ensure the franchise remains in the mix to stage more Super Bowls this decade.

The Dolphins opponent for the game will be announced at a later date.

Teams bidding on Super Bowls are required to play host to an international game every five years. South Florida, which hosted Super Bowl LIV in January, likely will bid to host the NFL’s biggest game in 2025 and 2026.

The Dolphins are no strangers to the NFL International Series. In fact, they have played in London four times and Mexico once.

The Dolphins haven’t fared well in their previous trips to London, going 1-3. They suffered lopsided losses to the New Orleans Saints (20-0) in 2017 and New York Jets (27-14) in 2015 after routing the Oakland Raiders, 38-14, in 2014. They also lost to the New York Giants, 13-10, in 2007 —- the first NFL regular-season game played outside of North America.
