1898 The U.S. Supreme Court, in United States v. Wong Kim Ark, ruled 6-2 that Wong, who was born in the United States to Chinese immigrants, was an American citizen.

1963 The Alfred Hitchcock film “The Birds” premiered in New York. 1932 The “Snodgrass-Herron” plan for a $5.5 million Downtown subway to relieve traffic congestion was presented to Council. 1978 The Schenley High School Spartans won the PIAA class AAA Basketball Championsh­ip, defeating Lebanon High 51-50 at Hershey, Pa.

1990 President George H.W. Bush presented the Congressio­nal Gold Medal to the widow of U.S. Olympic legend Jesse Owens. 2001 The Allegheny Trail Alliance began a campaign to promote the expansion of the 204-mile hiking/biking trail known as the Great Allegheny Passage. When complete, it would link Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.
