Rescue pup wins Cadbury Bunny tryouts

- By CNN

HERSHEY, Pa. — Lieutenant Dan, a two-legged dog who has overcome adversity, on Tuesday was named the winner of the 2020 Cadbury Bunny Tryouts.

He was born with a birth defect that caused a severe deformity of his hind limbs and tail, according to his owner, Laura Person of New Richmond, Ohio. Because the deformity could not be corrected and caused him pain, his hind legs were amputated. But that hasn’t stopped the hound dog from living life to the fullest. This rescue pup loves to wrestle, play, run, hike and swim, Ms. Person said.

“Lieutenant Dan is the epitome of inspiration, passion and energy, showcasing that no matter what challenges you, you can overcome it,” said Ethan Mandel of Cadbury, who added that almost 200,000 votes were cast.

This year’s Cadbury Bunny Tryouts prompted over 4,000 entries from all 50 states. The Cadbury team narrowed down the competition to 10 finalists which included a mini horse, llama, duck, hamster, pig, dogs and cats. Conswala, a llama from Adams County, Pa., was also in the top 10 last year.

“The outpouring of support for our Lieutenant Dan was just amazing!” said Ms. Person. “We received so many heartwarming messages saying how much joy and inspiration he brings to people’s days.”

To celebrate his victory,

Lieutenant Dan will receive $5,000, and Cadbury has donated $10,000 to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Cadbury USA is owned by The Hershey Co.
