Arts intermission

Consider donating tickets to help out

-

Art, music and theater contribute inestimably to the quality of life in a city and region. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of performances and exhibitions, and closed museums.

Art, theater and music enthusiasts, musicians and dancers, all suffered disappointment. Arts organizations large and small now face financial challenges unthought of a few months ago.

The arts will blossom again — if lovers of the arts help out. Patrons should consider donating the cost of a ticket to a canceled performance at the community theater or the symphony or the jazz concert, rather than requesting a refund. Ticket donations may be tax deductible. Some organizations are offering a ticket exchange for future performances. That’s also a good option for helping out.

Local and summer theaters likely face a substantial hit, with little ability to absorb losses. For community theater troupes, that $20 ticket donation goes a long way.

“This is just intermission,” read the marquees in the Pittsburgh Downtown Cultural District. True enough. The arts are the hallmark of a civilized society. This virus might shut down live performances, but it can’t kill the present or future of the arts. Arts lovers hungering for performances or paintings can find live performances online and many museums also provide access to artworks in their collection.

Patronize online performances, enjoy them, and think about making a donation.

These wonderful organizations and others need your help due to the impact of the pandemic. A list of cancellations tells us everything we need to know about the financial challenges arts organizations face.

• In Pittsburgh, the cultural trust has canceled all events through May 10.

• The Carnegie Museums are closed.

• Numerous community theaters have been forced to cancel performances and fundraisers.

The arts add depth to the fabric of our lives. Right now, they need help. Whether you’re a regular or an occasional visitor to your favorite theater, music hall or museum, this is the time to make a difference. Those who remain employed amidst this dark moment owe a special thanks to those who bring joy in the form of art.

Support for the arts will bring incredible dividends to individuals and the community. all
