Penn State adds wide receiver to its 2021 recruiting class.
Lonnie White Jr. became the 12th member of Penn State’s 2021 football class when he renounced his commitment to play baseball at Clemson. White plays quarterback and wide receiver at Malvern Prep in Coatesville, Pa. He expects to play wide receiver for the Nittany Lions.
White had several offers to play college football. Pitt, Syracuse, Michigan, Maryland, Tennessee, Rutgers and Michigan State were among the over 20 schools vying for him.
This 6-foot-2, 210-pound receiver is a two-star recruit on Rivals.
The Nittany Lions have the 12th-best recruit class in America, according to Rivals.
Auto racing
Denny Hamlin closed NASCAR’s iRacing Series with a victory at a simulation of throwback North Wilkesboro Speedway. The Daytona 500 winner was instrumental in organizing his fellow Cup drivers for the invitational series that started after the series was suspended.
• The resurrection of Kyle Larson’s career began with a 25-hour drive from California to Iowa for a $15,000-to-win World of Outlaws race. Fired by Chip Ganassi racing in April for using a racial slur, Larson started 18th and finished 10th.
Baseball
Mary Pratt, who pitched for the Rockford Peaches and Kenosha Comets in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, died. She was 101. The league was profiled in the 1992 movie, “A League of Their Own.”
Elsewhere
ESPN is finally making a change in its “Monday Night Football” booth after a couple of months of speculation. Play-by-play announcer Joe Tessitore and analyst Booger McFarland will not return to their roles in 2020.
• Olympic wrestling great Bruce Baumgartner wrapped up his final day at Edinboro University and retired from his post as assistant VP of advancement.
