Awards and Honors

Graham Hatfull,a professor of biotechnol­ogy in the department of biological sciences at the University of Pittsburgh’s Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, was elected a 2020 member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Mr. Hatfull’s work with SeaPhages, a national program that teaches undergradu­ates students to discover bacterioph­ages, led to the creation of a phage cocktail used to fight an antibiotic resistant infection in a 15year old lung transplant patient.

Herb Douglas was named the 2020 Visit-Pittsburgh Bob Imperata Passion for Pittsburgh Award recipient. The award is bestowed yearly to an individual, group or organizati­on who displays a passion for Pittsburgh and a passion for promoting the city. Mr. Douglas, a Pittsburgh native and the oldest living African American Olympic medalist, has been a staunch advocate for his hometown and for the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a multisport athlete in track and field and football.

Year Awards, which recognize outstandin­g contributi­ons to the region’s business, sports and travel and tourism industry, are: Meet-Pittsburgh Partner of the Year — Kim Sarkady of the American Trucking Associatio­ns; Sports-Pittsburgh Partner of the Year — Jennifer Tuscano of the University of Pittsburgh Athletics; Marketing Partner of the Year — Mitch Swain of the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council; Destinatio­n Services Partner of the Year — Megs Yunn of Beverly’s Birthdays; and Partnershi­p Developmen­t Partner of the Year — Pittsburgh Brewing Co.

412 Food Rescue was recognized as a winner of Fast Company’s 2020 World Changing Ideas Award. The award honors businesses, policies, projects and concepts that are actively engaged and deeply committed to flattening the curve when it comes to the climate crisis, social injustice or economic inequality. 412 Food Rescue’s Food Rescue Hero app won the Apps category and was selected as a finalist in the Food category. The app coordinate­s over 10,000 volunteer food rescue drivers in Pittsburgh and is now scaling food recovery in 6 cities nationwide.
