• Allegheny County reports only new death in Western Pa.,

Pennsylvan­ia’s death toll from COVID-19 jumped by 72 on Saturday to 3,688, with one of those deaths reported in Allegheny County.

Statewide there were 1,078 new cases of people infected with the novel coronaviru­s, bringing the commonweal­th’s reported total to 55,316.

There were 31 new cases reported Saturday in Allegheny County and an additional 24 cases total from other Western Pennsylvan­ia counties.

The lone death reported in the county brings the total number of fatalities blamed on COVID-19 to 120, the highest number in the region. No other county in Western Pennsylvan­ia reported a death on Saturday.

Of those Allegheny County deaths, 110 were confirmed by testing to have been positive for COVID-19, while 10 are probable.

A case is probable “when the person displays symptoms of COVID-19 and has had close contact with a confirmed positive case but has not had a positive test themselves,” according to the county.

The deceased ranged in age from 42 to 103.

The number of new cases brings the county total to 1,486, which includes 1,417 confirmed cases and 69 probable cases. That equates to a 7% positive rate for the 20,701 tests that have been conducted.

Of those cases, 273 represent past or present hospitaliz­ations, an increase of 14. There have been 116 people admitted to intensive care units, and 66 of them have required mechanical ventilatio­n.

More than half of those infected with COVID-19 in the county — 53% — are female.

The age bracket with the highest number of cases is 25-49, with 501 cases or 34%. That is followed by 439 cases in the 65-plus age range, and then 421 cases for those aged 50-64.

According to data looking at positive cases by race, the county reported the following breakdown: 55% white; 20% black; 2% Asian; less than 1% other; and 23% unknown.
