Penguins can work out Tuesday

The Penguins are planning to begin onice workouts Tuesday at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry as the NHL moves into Phase 2 of its return-to-play plan.

These on-ice and off-ice sessions will be voluntary and player-led in small groups of six or fewer. Coaches employed by the team are not permitted to attend.

Buffalo Sabres forward Kyle Okposo had surgery to repair a right knee injury, leaving him plenty of time to recover during the team’s extended break. The Sabres are off indefinite­ly after being one of seven teams to not qualify for the return-to-play format.

Golf

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine approved a plan for Muirfield Village Golf Club to have at least some fans for the Memorial July 13-19, which would make it the first PGA Tour event with a crowd since the tour was shut down March 13 by the coronaviru­s.

Basketball

Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand are giving $100 million to organizati­ons dedicated to promoting racial equality and social justice.

• The NBA’s return-to-play plan, which would have 22 teams resume the 2019-20 season in late July, cleared another hurdle when the NBPA’s board voted to approve further negotiatio­ns with the league.

• The WNBA proposed starting its delayed regular season in a single Florida location, similar to the NBA’s plan. The WNBA plan calls for a 22-game season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Colleges

Utah suspended defensive coordinato­r Morgan Scalley and launched an external investigat­ion concerning a 2013 text message he sent that included a racial slur.

• Oklahoma State became the first school to be punished by the NCAA in the fallout from the federal corruption probe into college basketball. The Cowboys men’s basketball team was banned from the upcoming postseason among numerous penalties.

Harness racing

The Grade I Santa Anita Derby was postponed for two months after the racetrack was ordered closed on March 27. The track received approval from officials to reopen two weeks ago and the Derby Saturday has a purse of $400,000, down from $1 million.
