1909 The University of Pittsburgh began its removal from the North Side to Oakland, where it dedicated State Hall, laid the cornerston­e for Thaw Hall (School of Engineerin­g) and broke ground for the School of Medicine.

1949 J.C. Warner, chemistry department head and wartime atomic scientist, was named to succeed Robert E. Doherty on the latter’s retirement July 1, 1950, as president of Carnegie Tech. 1969 The Senate confirmed Warren Burger to be the new chief justice of the United States, succeeding Earl Warren.

1979 An Erie jury found former Allegheny County Manpower director Robert L. Hawkins guilty of payroll frauds totaling $80,000. 2010 The U.S. and its allies scored a long-sought victory by pushing through new U.N. sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program, punishment­s Tehran dismissed as “annoying flies.”
