1567 Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned in Lochleven Castle in Scotland. (She escaped almost a year later but ended up imprisoned again.)

1864 Allegheny City’s Sanitary Fair closed after raising $363,570 in 16 days for benefit of Union soldiers and their dependents. At the end of the war, $200,000 in unused funds were given to West Penn Hospital as a nucleus for an endowment. 1975 DeLeuw, Cather & Co. was to study the Skybus concept. The firm of engineers chosen by Transit Task Force would receive $446,745 for the study.

1994 The U.S. Open Golf Championsh­ip began at Oakmont Country Club. (Ernie Els, of South Africa, won in a playoff on

June 21.)

2015 Real estate mogul Donald Trump launched his successful campaign to become president of the United States with a speech at Trump Tower in Manhattan.
