Allegheny County reports 45 new coronavirus cases

- By Hallie Lauer

Allegheny County reported 45 new positive cases on Monday — the highest single-day increase since 45 cases were announced May 7, when the county was still in the red phase.

Dr. Debra Bogen, head of the county health department, attributed the rise in cases to more people going out to bars and restaurants and increased travel outside the county.

This latest data comes less than a week after the county reported zero new cases of the virus.

With the new figures, the county total is now at 2,220 positive cases of the virus. Of those, 296 cases — 13% of the county’s total — are in health care workers.

Of the latest 45 cases, 40% affected people ages 25 to 49, and 20% are among those 19 to 24, Dr. Bogen said.

County officials encouraged residents to continue to wear masks — over their mouths and noses — as well as continuing to social distance in an effort to

bring the number of cases back down.

“We need folks to stay diligent,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “There was a natural relaxation when we went into the green phase. We need to keep doing all the things we’ve been doing the last three months that got us into the green.”

The county has reported no new deaths for the second day in a row, keeping the total at 178. The state is reporting 456 new cases of the virus, bringing the statewide total to 82,186.

There are only three additional deaths in Pennsylvania — one each in Berks, Lancaster and Lehigh counties — making the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the state 6,426.

The number of past or present hospitalizations in Allegheny County due to the virus rose by one for a total of 365.
