Successful Moon basketball coach steps down to spend time with family.

Adam Kaufman, who guided teams to two WPIAL titles and a PIAA title in 14 seasons, resigned as boys basketball coach at Moon a year after leading the Tigers to a state championsh­ip.

Kaufman, 40, and his wife, Katie, have four children between the ages of 5 (twins) and 9. He has seen his family a lot over the past few months, and wants to continue to do so.

Kaufman compiled a 226135 record in stops at Bishop Canevin, Montour and Moon. He guided Montour to two WPIAL titles before coming to Moon in 2014.

In six seasons at Moon, he went 83-62. The 2019 team won the PIAA Class 5A championsh­ip, defeating Philadelph­ia Catholic League power Archbishop Wood in the final. Kaufman was named the state Class 5A coach of the year and Post-Gazette coach of the year. The Tigers went 6-16 last season.

College football

Trey Andersen, a 6-foot-6, 250-pound tight end from Lehi, Utah, verbally committed to the Panthers for 2021. Andersen was rated a twostar prospect by Rivals.com and a three-star recruit by 247 Sports. He was previously committed to Brigham Young’s 2019 recruiting class but chose to go on a year-long Mormon mission. The son of former New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Jason Andersen, he received scholarshi­p offers from Cal, Utah State and Pitt within the last couple of weeks.

bench and scored her first National Women’s Soccer League goal to pull the Utah Royals into a 3-3 draw with the Houston Dash in the Challenge Cup. The NWSL is the first profession­al team sports league in the United States to play amid the pandemic.

Baseball

Former Pirate Jared Hughes, a sinkerball­ing reliever, and the New York Mets agreed Tuesday to a $700,000, one-year contract, a deal that amounts to $259,259 in prorated pay over the 60game season. Hughes can earn an additional $300,000 for days on the active roster: $50,000 each for 10 and 30, and $100,000 apiece for 45 and 60. The roster bonuses would not be prorated.

• Colorado Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond plans to sit out this season to be with his family.

• The San Diego Padres acquired middle infielder Jorge Mateo from the Oakland Athletics in the first trade since baseball resumed after a shutdown of more than three months.

Pro basketball

The Denver Nuggets said they’ve closed their facilities after two members of the team’s traveling party tested positive for the coronaviru­s over the weekend. A third tested positive this week. All three are asymptomat­ic, the Nuggets said.

• Pelicans general manager David Griffin said three New Orleans players have tested positive for COVID-19 and will be in self-isolation until testing shows they can return to team activities without infecting others.
