Tropical Storm Fay makes landfall in N.J.

-

Fast-moving Tropical Storm Fay made landfall in New Jersey Friday amid heavy, lashing rains that closed beaches and flooded shore town streets.

The storm turned streets in Jersey Shore towns into a version of Venice as it triggered flood warnings on the mainland, set a rainfall record in Philadelphia and inundated parts of South Jersey with over 5 inches of rain.

Fay made landfall just north of Atlantic City, N.J., shortly before 5 p.m., the National Hurricane Center said — quite close to where Hurricane Sandy arrived in 2012, the last time a named storm landed in the Garden State. Along the way, it generated heavy rains from the beaches to Philadelphia’s western suburbs.

The storm system was expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of rain, with the possibility of minor coastal flooding from New Jersey to Rhode Island, as well as flash flooding, the hurricane center said.
