Pennsylvania health officials Friday reported 1,009 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state total to 93,876. The last time the state saw an increase of over 1,000 new cases in a single day was May 10, when the majority of the state was still in the red phase.

Of the new cases, 354 are in Western Pennsylvania, with 180 coming from Allegheny County. Washington County had the second highest increase in the region with 44.

The Allegheny County Health Department also reported one new death, bringing the total to 197, and seven new hospitalizations. It marks the 11th consecutive day that the county has seen a triple-digit increase in new infections.

With these additional cases, the county total is now 4,547 cases. Health officials said these new infections come from 1,743 tests that were administered between June 24 and July 9. The ages of the new positive cases range from 2 to 91 years old, with the median age of 38.

The new hospitalizations as a result of COVID-19 bring the total of past and present hospitalizations in the county to 450. In the past week, the county saw an increase of 44 new hospitalizations, health officials said.

Rivers Casino on the North Shore resumed operations Friday morning under the latest set of restrictions handed down by county officials.

The county health department’s announcement Wednesday required that casinos looking to reopen their doors must prohibit guests from using tobacco products and e-cigarettes while also enforcing the state’s mask mandate.

Despite the fact that sit-down dining was not an option inside Rivers Casino, general manager Bill Keena said late Friday afternoon that he was encouraged with the response from visitors since reopening.

“We’re very pleased with the energy and activity on the gaming floor today,” Mr. Keena said in a statement. “Guests are happily complying with the new guidelines, including face coverings. People are ordering takeout from FLIPT, and our smokers are taking breaks outside. Everyone is social distancing and having a great time.”

The state health department is also reporting 32 new deaths, bringing the state death toll to 6,880 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
