1917 The first draft lists were published; many Pittsburgh­ers were destined to go overseas in the 28th and 80th divisions of the U.S. Army.

1944 An attempt by a group of German officials to assassinat­e Adolf Hitler with a bomb failed as the explosion only wounded the Nazi leader.

1948 United States Steel raised prices of finished steel product an average of $9.34 per ton.

1977 A flash flood hit Johnstown, Cambria County, killing more than 80 people and causing $350 million worth of damage. 1991 The Christian Buhl House, a restored 1805 house once occupied by the Buhl

family, opened to the public in Zelienople. 2010 The Senate Judiciary Committee voted almost totally along party lines, 13-6, to approve Elena Kagan to be the Supreme Court’s fourth female justice.
