CORONAVIRUS CASES RISE
Western Pennsylvania reports 422 new COVID-19 cases.
Allegheny County reported over 200 new cases of COVID-19 for the first time since July 17 and had the highest totals in Western Pennsylvania, which reported 422 new cases on Friday.
The county’s latest figures included four deaths and 244 new positive cases taken from 2,616 tests — double the number of tests from Thursday — that were administered between June 30 and July 30. The new cases range in age from 2 to 103 years old, with a median age of 52.
The county has had 8,094 total cases of COVID-19 since its first case was reported in mid March. Aside from Allegheny’s totals, Westmoreland County had the next highest, single-day increase with 27 new cases.
The Allegheny County Health Department said at least 77 of its new cases are from long-term care facilities. Of those, 30 of them have test dates from more than two weeks ago.
The health department noted that case investigations and contact tracing have been completed for those cases.
The health department also reported a recordbreaking day of hospitalizations, with 33 newly reported admissions. However, the county noted that Friday’s hospitalization numbers reflect residents that have been admitted over the last three weeks.
“The data shows that new admissions reached a peak in mid-July and the number of people hospitalized peaked about two weeks ago,” a statement from the Allegheny County Health Department said. “Both appear to be declining, however there is a lag in the reporting of up-to-date hospitalization data.”
The highest previous single-day increase in hospitalizations — 23 — was reported Thursday.
In total, 669 people have been hospitalized as a result of the virus.
With Allegheny County’s four new deaths, it has reported 239 total deaths as a result of the virus. The latest deaths occurred among people 74 to 93 years old, who died between July 23 and July 29.
Statewide, there were an additional 970 cases of the virus reported, bringing Pennsylvania’s total to 112,048 cases.
The Pennsylvania health department reported 13 additional deaths across the state, six of which occurred in Western Pennsylvania. In addition to Allegheny County’s deaths, Erie and Westmoreland counties each reported one death. The state death toll is now 7,189.
