Daily case counts continue falling in Allegheny

- By Sean D. Hamill

Newly reported daily COVID19 cases in Allegheny County continued to decline, with the county’s health department saying Saturday 87 new cases were reported to the department — the sixth time in the last eight days with fewer than 100 daily cases, after only reporting one day with fewer than 100 cases in the prior two weeks.

The county reported one new death due to the virus, a person in their 70s who died Friday. But the daily data released by the county’s health department also showed though COVID-19 hospitalizations remain higher than June numbers, they appear to finally be declining after an alltime peak last week.

Statewide, the Pennsylvania Department of Health on Saturday reported 813 new positive cases, with 252 of those new cases occurring in Western Pennsylvania, pushing the statewide total since the first case in March to 118,092 positive cases.

The 16 new deaths — four of them in Western Pennsylvania, with one each in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver and Lawrence counties — increased the total number of people who have died from COVID-19 statewide to 7,313.

Allegheny County on Saturday reported nine new hospitalizations, pushing the weekly total to 49 new cases since Sunday.

That weekly total was less than half the record weekly total of 104 people heading to hospitals with COVID-19 complications from July 26 to Aug. 1, a week when the county twice set daily records for new COVID-19 hospitalizations with 23 new hospitalizations on July 30 and 33 on July 31.

The people whose positive COVID-19 cases were reported by Allegheny County on Saturday ranged in age from 6 to 96 years old, with a median age of 50, and the date of their positive tests ranged from July 16 to August 7.

The median age of daily reported cases continues to increase. After median ages in the 20s at the beginning of this summer surge that began in late June when the state started to try to reopen the economy — bars and restaurants in particular — the median age, and the age of those contracting the virus in the county, continues to increase, which the county says indicates community spread is still occurring.

The county on Saturday reported that the age groups and gender of the 87 newly reported cases as follows:
