Mayor Bill Peduto on Thursday announced the appointment of a new city treasurer.

Douglas Anderson, of Shadyside, is set to take office as the Department of Finance’s director during the first week of September if the appointment is approved by city council. He has worked in the city controller’s office for over 12 years.

“Douglas Anderson brings vast experience in finance and government to our administration, and provides a steady hand in a time of great economic uncertainty,” Mr. Peduto said in a statement. “I am very happy he is joining us.”

Margaret Lanier was the city’s previous treasurer. She retired last month after working for the city for nearly four decades.

In a statement, Mr. Anderson said, “As Pittsburgh faces the fiscal challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, I am honored to have the opportunity to lead and work with the great staff of the Department of Finance to help the city through these unpredictable times.”

Before working as deputy controller, Mr. Anderson was an auditor in the state Auditor General’s office and a public information officer in the county’s Prothonotary office. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Duquesne University and a master’s in public management from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College.

The finance department handles the collection, deposit, and investment of the city’s funds, in addition to being the tax collector for the Pittsburgh School District and the Carnegie Library.
