Pa. reports about 600 new virus cases

The Pennsylvan­ia Health Department reported 601 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, with the Pittsburgh region accounting for 174 of those latest infections.

In Western Pennsylvan­ia, Allegheny County saw the highest single-day increase for Monday — with 75 new cases — followed by Westmorela­nd County with 16 new positive cases and Washington County, 15. However, Monday marked the fourth straight day that Allegheny saw fewer than 100 new daily cases.

The new statewide total is 119,453 cases since the pandemic started in mid-March.

Allegheny’s total number of positive cases now stands at 8,932. The newly reported cases in the county come from 1,331 tests that were administer­ed between Aug. 3 and 9. Those who have recently tested positive for the virus range in age from 10 to 94 years old, with a median age of 46, according to health officials.

One additional county resident was admitted to the hospital for treatment since Sunday, bringing the total to 735 county residents hospitaliz­ed since the pandemic began.

The state reported four more COVID-19 related deaths, two of which were in Western Pennsylvan­ia — one each in Washington and Erie counties — for a statewide total of 7,317 deaths. Allegheny County reported no new deaths on Monday; the county death toll remains at 259.
